BUILDING TIP
Ralph Roberts on Lost Foam and Nylon Stockings
I had just finished wrapping a fuse with glass and soaked it well with poly resin. Well, I hung it up by the tail end and stepped away. When I returned all the glass cloth had slid forward and some fell off and landed in a big sloppy pile onto my garage floor. I was not happy to say the least. Apparently the poly resin dissolved the Super 77 adhesive that was holding the glass onto the tape-wrapped fuse. Then good ol' gravity took over.
I have since made several lost-foam fuselages and this is the killer tip. After you have piled on the glass, take a nylon stocking and stretch it over the fuse. Take the open end and twist it tight. Keep twisting until the stocking won't stretch any more. Then just ca the twisted nylon. You could also just knot the open end, but I find that ca works great and you can get the nylon tighter. Then Resin away. The nylon forces all the glass down onto the fuse and gives you a sanding barrier. When you go to sand the fuse you will hit the nylon before the glass. This way you can stop sanding and hit it with more resin.
Oh, be sure to ask your wife/gf before you raid her nylon stocking drawer.
Great tip eh???? |
